THE LONG AWAITED, 2008 By Patricia Piccinini

The Long Awaited, by Patricia Piccinini, is a sculpture which is made from silicon, fiberglass, human hair, plywood, leather and clothing to form a hybrid, part human (old man) and part seal. This creates an unusual species which can be confronting to some. Her work shows the creature lying on a table, leaning on a young boys lap. Piccinini has used the boys innocence to evoke emotion. It is human nature for us to be frightened or cautious when we don't understand something and what Piccinini wants is for us to move beyond that. The child is symbolic because it use to represent all of us when we were young. Piccinini's message is to tell us that we are/have lost our curiosity, our individuality, our will to explore and dream. She wants to take us back to our childhoods. To a child, this hybrid/creature would be something harmless, something approachable, something in which they could play and interact with. However as adults, our views are exactly the opposite. This strong and unusual bond between the two also reminded me of the Beauty and the Beast, where two extreme opposites (child = beauty and hybrid = beast) met and fell in love despite their differences.

Cute... Nah Its Evil!

At day time this cat is like every other ordinary cat, it runs around, plays with its owners, comes up and rubs against, looks into your eyes and purr-rs. You can almost hear it say "i love you."  However when the sun goes down, its eyes glow bright green and that killer instinct possesses it. Sometimes it hides in the bush, the trees or the long grass waiting for its prey, and when you stumble upon it by accident, it jumps out and attacks you, scaring the wits out of you and then it will go back to its hiding spot. Fortunately i got off lightly, with a few scratches, i couldn't say the same to the two dead birds we found the next morning in front of our garage.

You should see that cat hunt, it mimics  tigers, lions and cheaters. I think its evil, you decide!!
